Monthly Favourites: May 2012!

This past long weekend has been full of highs and lows, I adored watching all the Jubilee celebrations and baking a red, white & blue Victoria sponge cake but I don't think I have felt so poorly in a very long time. I have been sleeping pretty much non stop for four days, I honestly didn't even know it was possible to sleep so much and I feel so run down and just generally, meh! I'm beginning to feel a little better now, but I still can't stomach eating anything, bad times. But in a bid to take my mind off things I thought I would do my May favourites, because well, who doesn't love talking about pretty make up bits and bobs when they're feeling less than chipper. I haven't done a favourites post in a little while so I could have gone a tad over the top, but I have been super restrained and only photographed my favourite favourites from the past month or two!

The Caudalie Eau de Beaute Beauty Elixir has had a lot of coverage in the bloggersphere recently & I very much think that it's one of those love it or hate it kind of products. There is no denying that this has a strong scent & it's definitely a scent that not everyone will love but personally, I absolutely adore it. I'm not quite sure where to start in terms of describing the scent, it's minty with almost a hint of cooling menthol & a herbal kick and let me tell you this, if you have a cold, a few spritzes of this over your face will feel like heaven! This has saved me over the past couple of days, I'm not quite sure what I would have done without it. I originally purchased this because it contains rosemary & I've heard on the grapevine that rosemary helps with breakouts and blemishes. My skin is generally okay, but lately I've been getting a few tiny spots on my forehead & this product in conjunction with another has really done wonders in clearing up those blemishes. My skin feels less congested & looks a million times smoother. For me this is well worth every single penny!

Sitting out in the sunshine for hours on end is just not my thing at all, whenever I attempt it I always give up after 10 minutes because I get too hot or wasps start buzzing around way too close to me and I make my way back inside to the safety of the shade. Unfortunately this means I look like Casper the ghost all year round, which usually I don't mind but I found some of the Garnier Summer Body Moisturising Lotion in my bathroom (the product fairy aka my mama must have purchased some!) and I decided to give it a go. I tried out the Light Sun Kissed Look version first and after three or four days I noticed a slight warmth to my skin which I really quite liked. I was curious to see how the Deep Sun Kissed Look version would look on my skin and after one use my skin was noticeably more sun kissed. I wasn't very precise when I was applying it so my knees are a tad on the orange side but I'll try harder next time in a bid to avoid that! I don't find it to be super moisturising though so I usually apply another body butter or lotion a few hours after applying the Summer Body.

The slight tan that I now have means that I can finally wear the MAC Face & Body foundation without my face looking a completely different colour to the rest of my body - yay! This is absolutely my summer foundation of choice because once I've applied it & it's settled nicely on my skin it does not budge until I take it off in the evenings. It also feels very light, which is a must for me in the warm weather (not that we've had much of that lately - hello rain!) because there's nothing worse than feeling like your face is caked in make up on a hot afternoon - yuck! Face & Body has a light yet buildable coverage that leaves a beautiful glowy finish & I just love it, I haven't found another foundation I love wearing as much as this one in the summer.

The summer is all about fresh, healthy looking & glowing make up and a product I know I'm going to be reaching for all summer long is the Jemma Kidd Dewy Glow All Over Radiance Creme in Iced Gold. I pop this along the tops of my cheekbones & on my brow bone for an effortless healthy glow. I expected this to feel much creamier than it does but after a bit of warming up it seems to glide on super easily and gives a really beautiful, yet very natural highlight that lasts a really long time throughout the day on my dry skin. I particularly love how this looks over the Face & Body foundation, it's a beautiful summer combination.

The Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder duo from ELF is a product that I have recently rediscovered, mostly for the bronzing powder. In the pan it looks super dark and I remember the first time I looked at it I thought there would be no way I could make it work on my fair skin. I was wrong because with a light hand & a fluffy brush I find that this is a really lovely contouring powder. I'm not sure why I neglected it for such a long time, but I'm happy I've fallen back in love with it again.

Ever since the beautiful Leanne from Do Not Refreeze gave the Collection 2000 Shimmer Shades  blush in the shade Blushalicious to me for my birthday last month I have been reaching for it all the time, and there's nothing I don't love about it! The four shades are large enough to be used individually; there is a baby pink, a slightly deeper rosy pink, a peach & a light almost highlighter-esque pink shade and the four colours look gorgeous when swirled together so you're almost getting 5 blush shades in one compact! I love swirling all the shades together the most and it gives me a gorgeous warm almost coral pink blush to my cheeks which is so flattering. I also really like the packaging, the see through plastic makes a nice change & it feels pretty sturdy too. This is one of those all round lovely products that I think everyone should have in their collection.

In terms of nail polish, when summer rolls around I always always always want to wear blue shades on my nails. Blue is my all time favourite colour & for some reason I find it to be a really flattering colour for my skin tone. My two favourite shades of the moment are Essie Borrowed & Blue and Models Own Blooboo. They're both absolutely gorgeous and I think they're both up there in my top ten favourite polishes of all time.

Lately I have either been into a really bright lip or a barely there pink lip - there's not really been much in between for me these past couple of months. For a bright lip my favourite lipstick has been All About Me from Topshop which is a super intense blue toned hot pink shade, which I think is divine. I love everything about Topshop lipsticks, they're affordable, they have some stunning colours and the formulation is lovely. I would say they have quite a satin finish, they're not glossy but they're not super matte and drying either; they seem to have the perfect balance and this shade in particular has incredible staying power. It almost acts as a lip stain so as it's fading throughout the day it does so super evenly and doesn't completely disappear which ensures you're still left with a bit of colour even after eating and drinking.

I have found myself reaching for my Revlon Lip Butter in the shade Cupcake quite a bit over the last few weeks and I love how easy the colour is to wear. It's quite a light baby pink shade that you really don't have to think about before applying so it's super low maintenance and wonderfully creamy on the lips. The only thing I will say is that mine seems to have melted a bit at the bottom and broken a little which I guess is to be expected for such a creamy product but this isn't one I'll be throwing in my bag on warm summer afternoons because I can see it totally melting and becoming unsaveable! Plus there's not nearly as much product in these as I thought there was which is a little disappointing, if I used this on a daily basis I imagine I would probably get through one a month which would turn into a fairly pricey habit!

Okay, on to the last two products and in this case I have most definitely been saving the best for last. I shall start with my final lip product favourite of the month which is the Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector in the shade 01 which is called Rose Shimmer. Now, I have heard SO many things about these for a long time, but particularly in the last month so it was only a matter of time before I caved, and I am so glad that I did. I'm sure that I could get rid of 95% of my other lipglosses in my collection and just have this because it's gorgeous. I've heard that there's not a lot of difference between the three shades that it comes in, but I totally want to get them all! First of all I love the packaging, it's very chic looking & I like the ease of the squeezy tube & foam applicator combination. Secondly this smells like vanilla and caramel, it's pretty much like applying the scent of a cupcake to your lips, hello loveliness! And thirdly, the formulation is perfect. It feels hydrating to the lips, it's completely not sticky and it gives a slight hint of colour while somehow magically making your lips look a million times smoother & fuller and just generally kissable. Yes I really just said that. Hello cliche! £16 is a pretty hefty price tag for a lipgloss, but this is more than just a lipgloss, this is a Clarins lip gloss!

My final May favourite is one that I had to leave until the end because it just makes me happy inside. This is my first ever super high end make up product & you can tell it's posh because it comes with it's own velvet pouch to live in. That instantly makes something posh in my eyes! And I am, of course, talking about the Dior Rosy Glow Healthy Awakening Blush. There is not one single thing I don't adore about this blush, it's smooth to apply & gives the most stunning pop of cool toned light pink colour to my cheeks without looking too much on my warm toned complexion. It's super brightening & pretty much does what it says on the box, it's awakening & gives me a healthy glow. This is something I'll treasure forever, sure there's that silly 12 month expiry logo on the back but if Dior think I'm throwing this baby away after 12 months, they're very wrong! This will live in its little velvet pouch in my make up collection for a long time to come!

Which products are you currently loving? I'd also love to know what your top beauty item for the summer time is! Can you tell I'm excited for summer, I think I've mentioned is a billion times in this post!

xoxo

  9. I really love the Apricot-y smell of the Garnier Summer Body, much better than a lot of the other gradual tanners. I've been alternating using this with using the Johnson and Johnson one as I really like both (though the smell of the J&J one is not as nice). I really want to try the Caudalie Beauty Elixir but I've never spent that much on a beauty product so I am a bit nervous to do so! Have seen some great reviews of it though!
Really hope you start feeling better soon, feeling that poorly is awful - hope you can stomach eating something soon as I'm sure that'll make you feel better.

  16. I've been desperate to try Collection 2000 Shimmer Shades blocks. They are such good value for money and you are practically getting 5 shades in one! Four individuals and the option to swirl them all together like Benefits Hervana. I also LOVE Models Own polishes. Possibly my most favourite brand. Blooboo is so cute and I love the name of it. I'm a sucker for sweet shade names :) xx

  21. I'm sort of trying to insert myself into the world of makeup again after becoming a frumpy mummy kinda gal haha. I actually haven't worn lipstick for about 10 years (when I was 16) and your reviews of the Revlon Lip Butter have intrigued me! I couldn't bring myself to actually brave the brighter colours so went for a Natural Collection lip colour in Apple Blossom (very subtle)! Ah well at least it's a start!
