Ten Influential Books!

This tag is one of my absolute favourites. The idea is to list ten books that have been influential in your life somehow, but not to explain why. I put together my first list over on my book blog here, but I thought it would be fun to compile another list here.

Morning Breaks in the Elevator by Lemn Sissay
On Photography by Susan Sontag
Selected Stories by Katherine Mansfield
The Listeners by Leni Zumas
Waiting for Godot  by Samuel Beckett

Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes
Just Kids by Patti Smith
Maggot Moon by Sally Gardner
Dubliners by James Joyce
The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein

Are there any books that have been particularly influential in your life?

May Life Favourites!

May was my birthday month and my favourite gift was this beautiful peace lily house plant. I had been reading about plants that can help to improve air quality and the rich green leaves & crisp white flowers of the peace lily stole my heart. It's such an elegant plant and there's something about it having it around that I find inexplicably very calming. Perfect.

May Beauty Favourites!

So May kind of flew by in a blur, right? I'm not sure I've really achieved much because I've been chained to my desk, but it's almost all over and I'm so looking forward to being able to be a little more present in the blogosphere again very soon. Anyway as always at the end of the month, here are a few of my favourite beauty things from the last few weeks.
Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser
Yep, I had to include this in my favourites for a second month because it's my favourite of all of the favourites.

Sukin Rose Hip Hydrating Day Cream
Another staple in my skin care routine has been this moisturiser. It's hydrating but not greasy and it sinks in almost immediately making it a brilliant base for make up. I don't think it will give me enough moisture in the cooler months, but as we're approaching summer I think it will be a go-to for a long time to come.

Soap & Glory Fab Pore Mask*
Boots very kindly set me a parcel that included some of their best-selling products a little while ago and I definitely have not shown my appreciation enough. This mask from Soap & Glory was something I didn't try immediately because it didn't really sound particularly exciting, but ohh how I've been missing out. I've been using this post-weird-skin-reaction so I know for sure that my skin is okay with it and I'm so pleased about that because my skin always feels so fresh and completely cleansed after rinsing this off after 15 minutes.

I Love... Raspberry & Blackberry Body Spray*
This smells so good, like a fabulous cocktail that I can imagine drinking whilst sitting on a beach front somewhere warm watching the waves crash against the shore.

The Library of Fragrance Thunderstorm Scent
In complete contrast, The Library of Fragrance have somehow managed to perfectly capture the scent of fresh rain and gloomy clouds. How?! I have no idea, but it's really quite amazing.

Kiko Cream Foundation*
I definitely can't use this as a foundation because the lightest shade is too dark for my skin tone, but I have really been loving it as a cream bronzer to warm my complexion up. It's almost a little too warm for me because I'm so ghostly right now, but I'm working with it because I'm kind of into that look right now.

So Susan Universal Blush
My blush collection is a little out of control, but for most of the month this is the only one I've been reaching for. It's pink but it's not too warm, too cool, or too bright. It's very wearable and applies perfectly every time.

What was your favourite beauty product throughout May?

May Empties & Mini Reviews | Part Two

Liz Earle Signature Foundation
This was always just a smidgeon too dark for me, but nothing a bit of blending couldn't sort out. Giving a really good amount of coverage with a very natural finish, this was one I wore on a daily basis for a long time when my skin was going through a particularly blemishy patch. It's a little heavy for my liking now so I wouldn't repurchase, but I am considering the Liz Earle skin tint which sounds delightful.

Tarte Lights Camera Lashes Mascara
This was nice, but I'm not sure it's worth the money when there are so many brilliant highstreet alternatives. But I am someone who is a little reluctant to invest in something I'll only use for a couple of months.

Nip + Fab CC Eye Fix
I really enjoyed using this as a corrector before my under eye concealer and it really helped to cancel out my dark circles. It's a very light in texture so it didn't crease or settle into any fine lines. A really lovely product.

Eucerin Even Brighter Night Cream*
This was really nice. I'm not sure I noticed a brightening effect or any evening out of skin tone, but it was a brilliant moisturiser and one of those really reliable products.

Conscious Skincare Body Butter
Conscious Skincare is one of my favourite brands and this body butter was unbeatable over the colder months when my skin desperately needed its incredibly hydrating properties. One I would repurchase in time for next winter, but it's a little heavy for me at the moment.

Anatomicals Zap Zap Zap Gets That Chap*
So, this just didn't do anything at all. Not for me.

Beauty Protector Protect & Treat Mask*
This, like the shampoo and conditioner in the range, is brilliant! I'm not one to spend much on hair care products, but I'm definitely considering purchasing the full size once I've made my way through some more things. It also smells incredible, pretty wonderful all round really.

Beauty Blender Cleanser
An incredibly effective cleanser for sponges and brushes alike. I wasn't really expecting to be impressed by this, but I really have been. I'm not sure I'd purchase the full size, but it's one of those things I'm glad I've been able to try.

Natural Make Up and Acuvue Define Contact Lenses!

I've been a glasses wearer for over 14 years, and during those awkward mid to late teen years when I felt incredibly self-conscious in my glasses, a contact lens wearer. It's been a few years since I last had contact lenses, but I've been bitten by the lens bug again. Don't get me wrong I still love my glasses but I'd almost forgotten what my face looks like without them. After being reminded of how nice they can be, I think I'm going to get some lenses very soon to have around as an option.

Acuvue invited me to trial their Define lenses and I must admit that at first I was a little skeptical. I wasn't sure if the idea of adding a purely aesthetic element to a medical product was particularly appropriate. Importantly first and foremost they remain a medical product, and the more I thought about it the more I appreciated the thought of having the option to safely (because they have to be fitted to you) try a different look whilst simultaneously correcting my vision.

Brand Statement
  • NEW 1-DAY JOHNSON & JOHNSON ACUVUE® DEFINE™ to enhance the natural beauty of your eyes.
  • Inspired by the beauty of the natural eye, the lens combines a dark ring around the coloured portion of your eye with a luminous-effect pattern, resulting in a brighter, more memorable you. Choose from one of two designs to suit your eye colour. NATURAL SHIMMER™ for more depth and intensity or NATURAL SPARKLE™ to add a luminous brightening effect.

Although I have an astigmatism (-1.00 for reference) and these particular lenses don't come in a version specifically designed for that, my optician was able to account for it and calculated the most suitable prescription for me. It took a few minutes for the lenses to settle once I'd put them in, but I think we were both pleasantly surprised in the end by how good my vision is with them. They do sit a few millimeters low (noticeable if you really look up close, but not otherwise) but we agreed that if I chose to, I could wear them for up to 12 hours at a time and they are very comfortable.

Aesthetics wise I was also pleasantly surprised, and because my prescription is the same in both eyes I was able to trial both the Natural Shimmer and the Natural Sparkle. Prior to my fitting I'd spent a bit of time looking at pictures with and without lenses, and because everyone's eyes are different the results really do vary. I assumed that the Natural Sparkle would suit me best because my eyes are blue, but my experience proves that you should try both because you might be surprised!
Natural Shimmer // Natural Sparkle

Acuvue Define Natural Sparkle

Acuvue Define Natural Shimmer

L: Natural Shimmer. // R: Natural Sparkle.
Natural Sparkle.
Natural Sparkle defines the outer part of my eye ever so slightly, making my eyes look a little bigger and brightening my natural blue colour. They made a small but noticeable difference and a couple of people have remarked on how bright-eyed I look when I'm wearing them, which is always welcomed especially in the AM because I'm not a morning person!

Natural Shimmer.
Natural Shimmer was my unexpected favourite of the two because it adds an almost smokey look with depth and a lot of definition. They still look very natural, those who don't see me all the time wouldn't necessarily know I was wearing coloured lenses, but my mum (who obviously sees me all the time and is very familiar with my natural eye colour) noticed immediately. I love the result and if these lenses were made specifically for astigmatism (I'm hoping if they're popular enough they will be!) I would absolutely buy a few month's supply immediately.
It seems a little strange discussing my favourite way to wear contact lenses, I know, but I do have a favourite way to wear these. They make the most impact on me when I'm wearing a minimal make up look. A little of the NARS Tinted Moisturiser with the Seventeen Stay Time Concealer gives a beautiful, very natural looking base.

Benetint from Benefit gives a pretty flush to my cheeks and the Sleek Pout Polish in Bare Minimum makes my lips look full and hydrated. The Seventeen All Doll'd Up Mascara is the newest addition to my make up bag and gives my lashes enough curl, providing I remember to give them a good squeeze with an eyelash curler, that they actually make an impact over my hooded eyelids.

There is a voucher you can download & print for a free five day trial of these lenses on the Acuvue website here. They really pleasantly surprised me, so if you're interested it's definitely worth popping along to give them a try!
