Specs, baby.

I've been thinking a lot (read: wholly too much) about what this space has evolved into. Writing consistently here is something I've not managed to do for a long while. At first that weighed heavily on me, thinking 'oh I should be writing' at every possibility because I really wasn't busy. I had the time to invest, but I just couldn't bring myself to write. And now I can see that time away has allowed things to become clearer. It's like when you're standing close to a vast piece of art; you can see the details but they don't make sense because you haven't had a glimpse of the whole.

It's only now I see that this is a lo-fi space. It's not a curated collection of finished pieces because nothing I'm working on is remotely close to being finished. And I can't curate my thoughts because when I try to do that, it's like putting the plug back in to a swirling whirlpool of water - nothing can leave and everything becomes still. Instead this is a place for everyday moments that together may seem insignificant, but actually they unite to form life. Things that happen. Thoughts. Dreams. Hopes. Goals. Things I've bought, which are very few and far between these days. Things I didn't buy, of which there are many. Things I like and those I don't. The highs, the lows, the things in the middle. It's all real life. And that's what this has to be.

And so here are a few words about my new glasses. My new, extortionately expensive glasses. I don't like to think about how much they cost AND they were half price because they talked me into joining the monthly contact lens scheme. But y'know, gotta invest in your vision. Slightly strange glasses are my favourite. After years of oversized black plastic frames, my aesthetic this time (until my eyes invariably get worse and I need a stronger prescription) is middle aged man meets Harry Potter. Middle aged Harry Potter. And, so far, I'm pretty pleased with my decision.

  1. I thoroughly enjoy reading your blog because you share a collection of well-written posts about everyday bits and pieces - life is most definitely all the little bits along the way! Loving the new glasses - sometimes it's nice to splurge on something you know you'll use everyday :-)

  3. I always love reading your posts, whether they are 'finished' or not. They are always relateable.
Your new glasses look amazing, I've been putting off going to the opticians because I know my vision has got worse and I can't bare to spend hundreds of pounds on new glasses! xx

  7. Your blog is so unique from the other blogs I read, including personal lifestyle blogs (under which I categorise myself as well). I love how you describe it as a lo-fi space (: and I love that whole second paragraph in general <3 Always looking forward to seeing new posts on your blog! -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey's

  9. Love the glasses, love the blog. Yours is actually one of my absolute favourite ones and I keep returning to see if you have posted again. The inconsistent writing is something that is frustrating me about my own blog so bad though. I keep wanting to start over, but I think it's like you said that life in itself is inconsistent. Maybe I just need to learn to live with it.

    1. I think if a schedule works then that's great, I totally understand people wanting to know when to expect new posts. But I can't ever seem to keep up and then end up feeling terrible. And I don't think inconsistency is the worst thing in the world <3

  10. Loved reading this Jennie, I particularly liked your descriptor of your blog as a place where seemingly insignificant musings melt to showcase a lifestyle. I always, always get that from your blog. In fact, I can hardly believe we've never met?! We must fix that over tea and cake someday. Also, blooming love those glasses on you girl xx

    1. Gosh, I know! It's totally on me though - I always avoid events and meet ups because I'm so awkward. That post that was being shared on twitter a few weeks back about being different 'in real life' than 'on the internet' just made me want to hide away even more because I totally am: I can just about get a sentence out on the internet, in person I'm hopeless haha xx

  11. These glasses look lovely on you! And I can relate so much about the "need to write" thing. I can really only manage when I'm in the mood and not too stressed out. That's why I can't always stick to plans. Say I plan to write a post / chapter next tuesday, things are probably going to come up or I'll feel really empty-headed on tuesday so I can't really bring myself to write good content. Really always depends! Sometimes I'd just write multiple upcoming posts in bulks just in case, haha.

    1. Totally know what you mean, I'm the same! I was going to do a creative writing course but I just know that I'm not in the right space to be able write on demand at the moment.

  13. Those glasses look really good on you; I could never pull that style off. I like the idea of sailboat. being a low-fi space rather than a curated collection of finished pieces. It's more spontaneous and true to you, IMHO.
