January 2014 Non Beauty Favourites.

I know I'm not alone in thinking this month has flown by and yet felt really long at the same time. January is always an interesting month. The start brings with it so much hope and promise and I think it can often be difficult to keep the momentum alive throughout. I've certainly been guilty of having a few 'oh no, what am I doing?!' days but I've made sure I surrounded those days with a lot of positive thinking and happy things. Here are some of the things that have been making me smile...
Owl Oil/Tart Burner (£6.79)
This little guy has been one of my favourite purchases in a very long time. There's something very comforting about having a pretty tea light flickering away during the evenings, especially when it's illuminating a sweet owl and making the room smell lovely with whatever scent takes my fancy. I had no idea I would get as much happiness from this as I have, which sounds really silly I know, but I've started associating it with feeling really warm and cosy. Sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference.

Yankee Candle Fireside Treats (£1.20)
Sweet scents like these aren't something I usually go for, but there's something about this one that has perhaps changed my mind. It's not too overpowering, instead giving a delicate scent that's not too sickly. I can definitely see why this is a favourite of many!

Great Plains Night Lights Sequin Skirt* (£42.50)
You know when you find a piece of clothing that makes you feel amazing whenever you have the change to wear it? This skirt is that for me. The beautiful, subtle sparkle of the sequins adds that little bit of glamour that isn't present within most of my wardrobe, but it's a piece that can be dressed down as well as up, which I love because I don't get the chance to dress up very often.

Diana Mini Camera (£49)
This is such a sweet little camera that I'm so pleased to finally have in my collection after coveting it for a little while. I haven't had as much time as I would have liked to dedicate to taking pictures this month but I'm already looking forward to finishing the roll of film so I can get it processed and maybe get a couple of pictures printed for our home.

Love Hearts and Crosses Origami Bunny necklace* (£12.99)
This is a piece of jewellery I've barely taken off since I unwrapped it because it's so incredibly cute! It's dainty enough to look lovely with pretty much every outfit and the rose gold colour is absolutely beautiful. I think some rose gold pieces can look a little cheap sometimes, but this is one of those that looks a lot more expensive in person that it is and I love that!

Tom's Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce (£5)
This is a book I've mentioned a couple of times recently so I won't talk about it too much here again. All I'll say is that I think this is one of the sweetest children's books I've ever read. It's quite unique because nothing much really happens throughout, but it's beautifully written, overwhelmingly lovely and there's a little touch of magic in there to really inspire imaginations. It's beautiful.

Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachen Cohn & David Levithan (£4.40)
I found this hiding behind a pile of other books in The Works at the very start of the month. After hearing so much about it over on Book Tube in the run up to Christmas I had to pick it up as part of the 3 for £5 offer. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. It was a lovely, quick read that I started and finished on a particularly dreary Wednesday evening and it really cheered me up. It reminded me so much of being a teenager and all those feeling that go along with that. Very sweet and a good one to read around Christmas time for sure.

Sam Smith.
There is something incredibly inspiring in seeing someone do exactly what they're meant to be doing because they have a real talent for it. He makes me want to work harder at the things I love to do, even though I'm nowhere near as talented as he is at anything, but I don't think that's as important as I once thought it was. What's important is making the most of every second and spending as much time as you can doing something that makes you happy.

Is there anything that has made your Janaury that little bit better?

January 2014 Beauty Favourites.

And the award for most awkward photographs to get right ever goes to....the ones in this blog post! Three locations and many a blurred picture later, these were the best I could come up with. Please come back soon, sunshine. We all miss you! January has been a bit of a basic month for me beauty wise, nothing too fancy, just a collection of simple but very reliable products.

Good Things Blemish Control Gel Mask* ( £4.99)
If I could only use one word to sum up my feelings on this mask it would be 'yes' with several exclamation marks! I've been both a little slack on the skincare front & a bit stressed out recently and because of that I've had a few more pesky breakouts than usual. The issue I have is that my skin is quite dry, so I'm reluctant to use clay masks all the time because they can be a bit much, but they're amazing on my blemishes.

This gel mask came into my life a couple of weeks ago and it's love. It smells a little like menthol, almost like medicine you'd take if you were a bit congested (which I think is amazing), it tingles a little when I first put it on my skin (which I also love because it makes me feel like it's doing something!) and it helps to clear breakouts without leaving my skin feeling tight. It's perfect!

REN Vita Mineral Daily Supplement Moisturising Cream* (£19)
For the first half of the month this was my go-to moisturiser at night because it's beautifully hydrating and now it's feeling noticeably colder outside, I've been reaching for it a lot in the mornings too. This is a moisturiser I would describe as reliable. There's nothing overtly fancy about it, it promises to hydrate and it really delivers.

There are some beautiful ingredients including lots of anti-oxidants and vitamins to really protect the skin and keep it looking healthy. This is a truly lovely product and at under £20 it's not ridiculously priced either.

Max Factor Lash Extension Effect Mascara (£10.99)
In having a good rummage through my make up collection a few weeks ago I found this and decided to give it a go. I think it's a mascara I've tried before a really long time ago and I think this particular tube came from my mama who didn't get on with it, so she passed it over to me.

As the name suggests, this gives my lashes a lot of length and although I'm usually one that prefers a mascara to give a lot of volume, I've really been enjoying using this. Will it replace my beloved The Falsies? Probably not, but I would happily repurchase for those days when I want beautiful, long & fluttery lashes.

Love Your Skin Collagen Body Moisturising Gel* (£16.99)
I go through real phases when it comes to using body moisturiser, a lot of the time I avoid using it because, well, it's just a bit of a faff having to wait for it to sink in so my clothes don't stick uncomfortably to my skin.

I was really keen to try this moisturising gel because it's water based and as I had hoped, it sinks in pretty much instantly with no stickiness at all. It has a really delicate scent and offers enough hydration even during the depths of winter. It's a little more expensive than I would usually spend on a body product, but I do think it's well worth the investment - the bottle seems to be lasting me ages too!

Maybelline Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara* (£4.99)
This little gem was inside my December GlossyBox and I had no idea I would end up loving a brow product this much! This isn't really the right colour for me but as long as I don't use too much, this helps to tame my somewhat unruly brows without making them look too done.

I adore a strong brow look on pretty much everyone other than myself. If I ever properly fill mine in I end up looking completely ridiculous, like a child who has just discovered her mum's make up bag. This is pretty much the perfect product for me and it's beyond quick to apply - it's a winner!

NARS Deep Throat Blusher (£21.50)
This has been sitting in my blush drawer for the longest time, for some reason I've barely touched it and I have no idea why because it's beautiful! It's one of the most subtle blush colours I own but I can totally build up to get the slightly stronger, more statement look that I prefer.

It's a pretty peach, with just enough pink in there so that it doesn't look really odd on my complexion, it's a real beauty and I'm so happy that I dug it out at the start of the month. It's also reminded me how much I really like NARS blushes, they're such lovely quality and they wear so nicely throughout the day.

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Honey (£7.99)
In a bid to tear myself away from my much-loved tinted lipbalms, I've rediscovered this beauty. This is one of those lip colours that's really similar to my natural lip colour, it's just waaaaaay nicer. I love the twist up, crayon style packaging because it makes it so easy to apply and this is such a natural colour I can apply it without a mirror and not have to worry about making myself look utterly ridiculous. I think it's only a matter of time before I cave and go and check out the lacquer balms...oh gosh, don't let me!!

Are there any beauty products you've been particularly enjoying this month?

Today I will be mostly...

  • Attempting to take blog photographs even though it's pretty much already dark. Go away rain clouds!
  • Wailing along to this song on repeat, sorry neighbours!
  • Lusting over record players. Yep, still. I'll cave and buy one soon, I can feel the purchase coming. My bank balance is telling me no but my heart is telling me to DO IT! Besides, I have a record here just waiting to be played. It's whispering to me '...pssst...jennieee...play me...it's why I'm hereeee....!' I mean, it would be rude not to listen to it...
  • Trying to make a dent in my to-do list but I keep adding things I've already done so I can cross them off. I also add silly things like 'make lunch' even though that doesn't need to be on the list, I'm not likely to forget lunch!! It's one of my favourite parts of the day. True story.
  • Drinking my second third fourth cup of coffee! Oops.
  • Wondering how it's almost the end of January already. It simultaneously feels like it's been the quickest and the slowest month. That's not possible but I'm on my fourth coffee so I think anything is possible in my head today...
Are you having a nice Wednesday so far?

A few things I would like...

Hello & Happy Monday! This morning was one of those mornings where it was a real struggle to get out of bed and shuffle into the shower. All I really wanted to do was go back to sleep and I still do, so to distract myself on my lunch hour I've been doing a touch of online window shopping. It really does make everything that little bit better!

Jouer Matte Moisture Tint.
I have the luminizing moisture tint and I like it, but I would really love to try the matte version that everyone raved about last summer. It's pricey though!

Literary Prints by ObviousState over on Etsy.
ObviousState is one of my favourite Etsy stores, I could quite happily buy one of each of their prints and hang them around my home.

London Grammar If You Wait on vinyl.
I'm working on my vinyl collection and I already know I adore this album so I would love to own it on vinyl too. Even though I don't own a record player yet...I do like to do things backwards!

Pink Floyd Cropped Sweater.
Yes, just so much yes to this sweater!

Guerlain Meteorites Bubble Blush.
I've never tried anything from Guerlain before but I was browsing Escentual and these bubble blushes really caught my eye. They look so cute!

Revlon Lacquer Balm.
Revlon lip products are my favourite and I've been trying really hard to avoid reading reviews of these because I know I'll want to try a couple if I do. I don't need any more lip products though...don't let me give in!!

Is there anything you're currently lusting over?

My weekend...

+ Loving this amazingly sweet drawing Carly did of Ralphie and I! I would love Ralphie to be that big in real life, imagine arriving at work each day on a bunny!

+ Working on my new blog, something I'm really excited about! The idea for it came about in a coffee shop a couple of weeks ago, why are coffee shops so inspiring?!

+ Making time for some reading for Uni that I've been putting off, although I haven't done it all - oops! Time to dig out my highlighters and get the rest done this afternoon!

+ Finally doing some much-needed proper dusting - I'm notorious for just dusting around things instead of taking everything off and then dusting.

+ Pilates. This really helps me to relax and generally feel better within myself. It's something I need to incorporate into my daily routine I think. An hour in the morning would be the perfect start for the day.

+ Fighting off a cold, argh! I'm determined not to get sick this week, please pass me all of the oranges!

+ Watching The Voice - it's my guilty pleasure TV wise, love the spinny chair audition bit, after that I kind of tune out though...

+ Wandering into The Works and leaving with 5 new books. I probably shouldn't be allowed to go in there so often, their good prices are too hard to resist! I didn't even mind that I got caught in the worst storm ever on the way there, there were hail stones and everything!

+ Catching up on replying to comments. I've managed to get a little behind this week but I have a few hours today to catch up and I'm ridiculously excited to read your posts. I tend to start getting withdrawals from blog reading if I haven't had the time to squeeze any in for a few days!

Are you having a nice weekend?
I hope so!
