quiet contemplation; today is a new day and there are infinite possibilities.
I'm not much of a morning person. Being most productive between the hours of midnight and 3am usually puts a stop to rising early. I'm mostly okay with that but occasionally I dislike running within an almost entirely different time zone from those closest to me. It can feel a little isolating. A little too quiet.
Waking early with bright morning sunshine streaming through my windows in the summer is something I look forward to. It's even better when there's a soft, cool breeze that dances across my face, softly telling me that today is a new day and there are infinite possibilities. There's something so natural, so comforting and so human about it. No alarm clocks & no app giving me the stats on my sleep after waking me with a terrible tune that is nothing apart from incredibly annoying.
Because I still can't describe myself as a morning person, one of the first things I have to do is pad downstairs in my slippers (that are slightly too big but oh so cosy) to the kitchen to make a cup of coffee. It's become such a familiar routine that I don't have to think about anything. My cup is always in the same place and the kettle takes three minutes to boil. Opening the blinds to let the sunlight stream in is one of the simple pleasures in my life. I don't know why it gives me such a strong feeling of contentment, but it does.
The world outside is just waking up. The first few cars slowly make their way up the hill and the morning joggers pass by with their slightly rosy cheeks & headphones in, possibly streaming some kind of motivational upbeat exercise playlist. I admire them.
I like to sit outside for a few minutes, with my cup of coffee warming my hands and the hazy morning sunshine warming my face. A time for quiet contemplation. To be alone with my thoughts. To appreciate the little things. The birds busily feeding their sweet babies. The fluffy white clouds that really do look like cotton wool. And the flowers that are still blooming despite me forgetting to water them after a few days of no rain.
Even if it's just for a moment, everything is calm.
And I am content.
xoxo

DeleteLovely post! I love waking up early when it's sunny out as well. When it's winter I don't ever want to get up so those sunny mornings are a real treat!

DeleteThis is so beautifully written, Jennie! Your morning ritual sounds like a meditation in itself, wonderful :)
ReplyDeleteI wonder, do you ever thought about writing short stories?
Thank you lovely! I have a few things that I'm working on <3
DeleteLovely post, very evocative. I also feel the same way about summer mornings. winter doesn't have the same appeal does it?!
ReplyDeleteWinter mornings are all about staying in the warmth for as long as possible hehe xo
DeleteLovely post :) From now on I will be setting my alarm 15 minutes earlier to have this time. My current routine consists of mad dashes here there and everywhere before bolting out the door. It definitely pays to take some out to reflect. I would love to sit and stoke my cats for a few minutes before work instead of opting for the 'feed and run' approach. It always makes me feel so guilty xx
ReplyDeleteIt's so lovely to have those few minutes <3
DeleteLovely post, I love the way you've written it! There's something so calming about waking up naturally on a sunny morning :) xx

DeleteSuch a lovely post, you have a brilliant writing style. It's very engaging and you're right, the sunlight on a summer morning really does inspire optimism in the even the most pessimistic of people. x

DeleteI'm not a morning person either, I often end up going to bed as everyone else is waking up, but when I do wake up super early, I like going out for a walk and watching the city wake up, the coffee shops open, people going to work, etc.
ReplyDeleteps- Let me know when you've finished The Silkworm and we can fangirl over it together :)
A city waking up is beautiful. Ahh I totally will! xo
DeleteWow this is a beautiful post. I'm not a morning person either (I stay up too late), but on the rare occasions that I am up really early, I absolutely adore it, so I definitely can relate to this. Keep posting, I love reading them!

DeleteFor the longest time I was not a morning person, I liked to stay up late because that was when I found myself most productive with uni assignments etc. Since last winter I've become a morning person. In the summer it is the best, it's peaceful and motivating. I love your writing style and the Band of Horses song!

DeleteI'm not much of a morning person either, for the past five months I've been waking up at 6am for work and it's killing me! I do like it when I wake up early at the weekend and have enough time to appreciate the beginnings of a new day though, I can't wait until my weekday mornings are more relaxed too. xo

DeleteSwap that coffee for tea and this is one of my daily pleasures. I always like to wake myself up a touch earlier than my schedule requires so that I can take a few quiet moments by myself, whilst the house is quiet. Those moments feel like they feed my soul
