One.
Discovering a folder full of negatives in a box in the cupboard. I thought they were lost forever. There was also a bag of undeveloped film with them, which I'm looking forward to getting processed to see if any of their secrets will be revealed. I also just bought a new external hard drive (yes to all of the storage!) so I'll have to make a start on scanning the negatives very soon. I think it might be a sign from the universe, you know. A few years ago I had plans of setting up a print shop but I never quite got there. I had a jewellery shop for a little while but it wasn't my thing, it didn't make my heart as happy as shooting film does.
Two.
Finding a receipt in my inbox yesterday morning that informed me that I had apparently bought some books at 2am on New Year's Day. I do not remember doing that but I'm pretty excited about them all. I think I have better taste when I'm a bit tipsy. They were on sale too, thank goodness!
Three.
In contrast to that last one I've decided that I'm only going to purchase things if they're absolutely essential for as long as I can keep it up. Lately books have been my weakness and I'd be lying if I said I felt guilty about that, but I definitely have more than enough stories to immerse myself in for the time being. As for products and the like, I'm only going to let myself buy something if I don't already have an alternative in my cupboard.
Four.
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. I'm just over half way through and I'm so looking forward to finding an hour to finish it. The blurb makes it sound a little like a run-of-the-mill post-apocalyptic story, but it's so much more. So much character development!
Five.
The New Year! I'm wishing you all the happiness for 2015!

Any favourite blogs? As always I'd love to hear your recommendations!

There is nothing better than new books sometimes, but I know what you mean about having too many to read. I try and limit myself to having 3 unread, and once I've read those, then buy more! xxx

That sounds like a very good system! xo
DeleteTipsy book buying = my secret second life!
ReplyDeleteThat's so exciting that you've found some undeveloped film in your archives Jennie. I miss the magic of taking a roll of film to be developed and almost forgetting what you'd dedicated those 50 snapshots too. And I love the unexpectedness of how the photograph will develop, no matter how you adjusted settings, etc.! Modern day cameras make it too darn easy to manipulate a scene to precisely how you want things to be soon.
And thank you for my little mention!! So, so lovely of you - it's certainly brightened up my day whilst I suffer with the sniffles. xx
Haha I'm so glad someone else has done this too! There's a magic with film that words can't quite explain, I totally agree. The anticipation is the best part. You're so welcome, you know daisybutter has been a favourite for forever! <3 xo
DeleteDiscovering things you've lost at the back of the cupboard is such an amazing feeling! Love that you don't remember your 2am book purchases <3 I'm going to go check out your blog recommendations now xx

It really is, I'm so looking forward if they will share their secrets! xo
DeleteBooks are my weakness too! My parents never let me buy them, so naturally I just want to buy them more. When I was little, my parents would take my brothers and me to Barnes & Nobles on weekends and we'd spend the whole day there reading all the books we wanted but couldn't buy. However, whenever I pass by a secondhand bookstore, I always have to pop in and check it out. Usually I end up buying 5 books, but hey, they were for a good deal! Actually, I like secondhand books more than new ones. I love books that look like they've been lived in, if that makes sense. Anyways, I was wondering about the five blogs you share every week: are they blogs you've newly discovered and recommend or blogs you've followed for awhile and recommend? :) -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey's
ReplyDeleteSecondhand bookstores are like little treasure troves. I totally get what you mean, it's like they've had a life before coming to you and now you're getting to share in part of their journey!
DeleteIt depends really - some are new discoveries and some are old favourites that I have been particularly enjoying recently <3 xo
Happy new year Jennie :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Happy New Year! xo

DeleteD'aaw, you order books when you are tipsy - that's so cute aha! It could have been much worse! That book is on my list too and you've made it seem really interesting so I'll have to read it after I finish The Bone Clocks!
ReplyDeletexxx
Haha it definitely could have been worse! I really must start The Bone Clocks soon! xo
DeleteHappy New Year :)
ReplyDeleteI'm forever getting email notifications for things I have purchased when, shall we say, a touch inebriated. Books and music are the usual suspects and thankfully I never have any regrets.
I'm so pleased you're enjoying Station Eleven. x
Certainly one of the better things that can be purchased when a little tipsy! Happy New Year <3 xo
DeleteAh I do love buying new books. I hardly ever buy them new though - simply mooch around charity shops until some tickle my fancy. I feel less guilty then!
ReplyDeleteLoving all the blogs you mentioned!

DeleteI'd love to see more of your film photography Jennie! xx
ReplyDeleteI'll definitely happily share some! <3 xo
DeleteOoh do you have any idea what's on the rolls of film or will it be a complete surprise? I love this sort of thing. What with instant digital everything nowadays I think we've kind of lost some of the magic that comes with some of these simple excitements... I'm writing a kind of nostalgic post on this very subject at the moment as it happens! xo

DeleteI absolutely love that you buy books when you're drunk. That's amazing. Always a bookworm at heart! It's so good to hear that you are enjoying Station Eleven, it's on my list of books to read. I'm also hoping to buy less books this year, but I'm not sure how that will go - books are my weakness! xx
ReplyDeleteBooks are the best! xo
DeleteI'm with you on number three, so far I've only bought food and a 2015 diary, so two days in and I'm doing okay! I do fear books would be my downfall though! Happy new year! x

DeleteHappy new year to you too. Hope you gonna have a great one!
ReplyDeleteI was smiling while reading about those photographic films that you found, 'cause often happens to me the same when I'm back in Italy to my mum's. I used to love taking photos with an old school film camera (I miss those days).
I always enjoy so much reading your blog... you are great! :)
