Box of Blush.

Gone are my days of trying to squeeze hundreds of products into three sets of acrylic drawers as most of my make up now fits inside a smallish box. But not my blush collection. Oh no. That has a box all of its own. And yet I use maybe five or six on a somewhat regular basis.

There are some I'm holding on to for sentimental reasons; a purchase made when MAC was a big deal, the Dior Rosy Glow that I received as a gift after looking at it for weeks and weeks. There are some long past their best things in here that I don't use and should probably part with; the much coveted Jemma Kidd Dewy Glow that I open up and look at every once in a while, Illamasqua Promise Cream Blush that was my favourite for so long and reminds me of being twenty two. And there are things that I love right now; Too Faced Baby Love with its Polly Pocket heart shaped packaging that I bought in New York, the now discontinued but forever perfect NARS Douceur.

Little pans of colour. So many memories.

One New Album Each Day • 31 - 40

I was focusing on the new releases page of spotify during the week I listened to these albums and I found myself in a bit of a rut because a lot of them just aren't to my taste. A lot of it's very samey to me, but I still found a couple of real gems.

The Lonely City

“What does it feel like to be lonely? It feels like being hungry: like being hungry when everyone around you is readying for a feast. It feels shameful and alarming, and over time these feelings radiate outwards, making the lonely person increasingly isolated, increasingly estranged. It hurts, in the way that feelings do, and it also has physical consequences that take place invisibly, inside the closed compartments of the body. It advances, is what I’m trying to say, cold as ice and clear as glass, enclosing and engulfing.”

- Olivia Laing, The Lonely City

In the moment.

Changing my mind. Vanilla. Burnt toast. The scent of just blown out candles. Little Beatrix trying to steal my socks.

The soft violet, peach and blue of the sky at dusk in midsummer.

Next on my reading list
A Reunion of Ghosts by Judith Claire Mitchell.

The people you love become ghosts inside of you and like this you keep them alive - Robert Montgomery.

I am
A night owl who wishes she were awake to see a few more sunrises.

On my mind
Edinburgh, where I first felt truly alive and New York, where I last felt the same. Everything I've been meaning to start, but haven't. Soon, soon.

Listening to
Antony and the Johnsons, always.

Purchasing recently
Pomegranates, poetry + an array of overpriced hay for Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix of Bunnington because she demands variety. A lot of variety.

Wearing most days
Leggings + jumpers.

It's freeing to want to share words. It's okay to not, too.

Earth Hour.

Tonight from 8:30pm until 9:30pm we'll be switching off our lights for Earth Hour. I have an appointment with my cosiest pyjamas, some candles and the pure joy that comes from delving into a new book. I'm looking forward to it so much that I might have to make it a regular thing.

As for what I'm reading? A copy of My Name is Leon by Kit de Waal arrived this week, (I'm not sure where from but it's very gratefully received!), and it sounds like it might break my heart, which is, as I'm sure you know by now, one of my favourite types of book.

What are you currently reading?
And are you going to participate in Earth Hour tonight?

Hide My Purse, I Can't Resist Anymore...

Moo Free Bunnycomb Egg
One of these may or may not be sitting in our kitchen as I type and my goodness I'm not sure how much longer I can hold out before I find myself on the sofa with nothing but an empty box wondering how things ended up this way. I'm sure it won't be long. And I'm certain I'll have no regrets.

Kaweco Classic Sport Fountain Pen
Whether this purchase will be soon or a little further away I'm not sure. I'm waiting for a time when I feel like I've made enough progress with building my freelance portfolio to deserve a really nice pen. Right now it's a long way off, but we'll see.

iPhone 6 Phone Case*
My phone is a cheapy Nokia and I'm 99% certain I could throw mine out of an upstairs window and still have it work perfectly, so we all know that I don't have the first clue about cases that may actually at least try to save a phone from being smashed to smithereens if accidentally dropped. This one has good reviews, but any advice is more than welcome.

The Lonely City by Olivia Laing
'When Olivia Laing moved to New York City, she found herself inhabiting loneliness on a daily basis. The Lonely City is about the spaces between people and the things that draw them together, about sexuality, mortality and the magical possibilities of art. It's a celebration of a strange and lovely state, adrift from the larger continent of human experience, but intrinsic to the very act of being alive.'

Too Faced La Creme Colour Drenched Lipstick in Unicorn Tears
Because, well, just look at it!!

Is there anything you're currently trying to resist?

Early morning sunshine has medicinal properties for me, I'm certain of it.
Slowly establishing new, positive habits.
The raw, unbridled joy of a new notebook.
Beatrix running away with and hiding my tape measure. Socks. Pens. Hair ties.
Hiding her treats around the house in return.
It's become our favourite game.
She's so smart, she always finds them.
I've only just found the hair tie, hidden inside a shoe.
Rediscovering Antony and the Johnsons. Anohni's words give me light.
Vanilla everything.
Not allowing myself to be like that hair tie, hidden away for too long.
Because hiding from the storm clouds means the sunshine would be nothing but a distant memory.
